Sainsbury’s packaging for this Taste the Difference Scotch egg call it their “deluxe Scotch egg… made using a British free range egg and surrounded by traditionally seasoned out-door bred British pork.”
It is indeed well-seasoned, with a light pepper bite (white pepper, black pepper and nutmeg). The bumpy thick casing is seasoned multigrain breadcrumbs giving a jagged, rusctic farmhouse effect to the exterior. When opened, a poor dot yolk looks out from a rather depressingly small egg and the entire snack becomes dependent on its beefy casing.
The chic packaging also points out that “this product has been taste tested by a panel of customers to ensure that we continue to offer the very best in quality and flavour.” I truly hope that ‘this’ very Scotch egg wasn’t tested, handed around, fingered and rolled about in the hands of an unclean customer panel; studied and breathed upon, then returned to its packaging.
