The Ploughman’s

This is the first Scotch egg I’ve tried that combines cheese in its makeup. It really binds the sausage meat and other ingredients resulting in a slightly chewy, richer in flavour, body. When cut, there are smooth squeezes of runny cheese that stick to the knife and eventually the teeth. It’s not enough of an overriding flavour to mask the sausage however the onion does have a persistent taste.

The shell is golden thick, rolled generously in panko breadcrumbs, while the egg is cooked precisely (as you’d expect from The Handmade Scotch Egg Company). Serve alongside a spicy chutney!

Chilli

Another entry from The Handmade Scotch Egg Company, this Chilli alternative to the original has a meaty casing with fiery red chillies and peppers. The sausage meat is dense and glues together the ingredients while forming a cocoon around the egg. The chilli sting is not immediate but instead releases a slow burn with a finish of paprika seasoning.

The breadcrumb casing is thinner than many, however this does not encroach on the overall size of the snack, for it is plentiful and if thrown at someone could cause serious damage, perhaps even dent a wall? The egg was of respectable size too and boiled to perfection (no grey/green circle evidence of over-cooking). This is a zippy treat for those who like their snacks with spirit.

Black Watch

This chunky, fist-sized entry won the ‘Great Taste Gold Award’ in 2009 and is a favourite of Tom Parker-Bowles. As you can see from the picture, a thick and meaty rim cases the boiled egg, and contains, within the black pudding: blood, pearl barley, pork fat, oatmeal, onions and spices. A high proportion of oatmeal is often used in black pudding (as are onions) to absorb the pork blood.

The breadcrumb casing is thinner than some other Scotch eggs but Black Watch is all about the contents and a decision to replace standard sausage meat with black pudding. It’s a masculine globe with similarities to the Manchester Egg (pickled egg in a sausage and black-pudding coating). Yet, despite its acclaim and luminary following, I found the ingredients too dense and metallic, but then, I’m not a great black pudding supporter.

Casablanca Wee Ones

This delectable little Ferrero Rocher-type treat has a noticeable fiery inner-casing and a feverish tinge that follows on the tongue. It’s perfectly poppable in the mouth with a meaty and well-seasoned texture. The quail egg at the centre is cushioned by fired-up pork seasoned with Moroccan harrissa, fresh chilli, smoked paprika and red peppers. It’s the paprika and red pepper that really come through and leave for an excitable pallet.
